After 60 years in business, B&J Catalano has a portfolio of projects and a story to tell that few others in their industry sector can match.
But their website wasn’t doing them justice.
It was time to call in DASH Digital to deliver a website that reflects this modern, customer focused business while honouring its 60-year history.
The Process
The ‘getting to know you’ phase
B&J Catalano’s range of services is extensive – and it was important that these were all given equal billing on the website, whilst maintaining consistent messaging across all aspects of the business.
Understanding how the different aspects of the business fit together was key to developing a website that was easy to navigate for the end user.
Discussions focussed on whether the website should be structured by industry sector or by service type, or a mixture of both.
It became apparent that the civil and mining division was such a key sector for the business that it needed its own section. Other than that, the website was structured around the different services B&J Catalano provides, from bulk haulage to equipment hire, contract crushing to materials supply.
Once that key decision had been made, it fell to the head of B&J Catalano’s IT department to corral content from each of the internal sections of the business – a herculean task that was critical to the successful delivery of the website.
The design phase
In web designer speak, ‘above the fold’ is very ‘valuable real estate’. In normal person speak, this means that the section of the website that is immediately visible on your screen – without scrolling – is your opportunity to really grab your audience.
This principle is particularly important for a website like B&J Catalano’s, where there are so many different services aimed at so many different industry sectors.
It was this principle that drove the design of the website – placing a clickable screen wide banner image relevant to each service in a continually scrolling ‘carousel’ that enable the user to quickly find the section they are looking for.
This easy to navigate design doesn’t compromise on detail – the site also has a traditional navigation bar with drop down menus where users can learn about the company in more detail – from their company policies to their key people, their history to career opportunities.
The outcome
DASH Digital’s redesign has delivered a website that reflects the diversity of B&J Catalano’s business operations in a way that is easy to navigate, is content rich and showcases the company’s proud history.
