Mark D. Platt is a contemporary artist from Western Australia known for his unique abstract approach.

Increasingly recognised for his work both in Australia and internationally, Mark’s work skillfully captures the subtle essence of emotional visual experiences. Each piece is more than just art; it’s a distinct story waiting to be discovered, inviting you to witness the evolution of the artistic narrative.

The project: Website development

Working from one of the remotest capital cities in the world, but with a growing international reputation, it was clear that Mark needed an online presence that showcased his diverse portfolio to a wide audience.

The Process

The ‘getting to know you’ phase

Developing a website for an artist is a slightly different process. There was an argument that said all we needed to know about Mark we would find in his art. And this was true – his art has a strong narrative, and you can sense the man behind the work.

What we did need to know however was how Mark wanted to use the website to showcase his portfolio. Was it a snapshot of his work that would act as an introduction or ‘calling card’ to exhibition organisers? Was it an depth exploration of his process? Did it need to catalogue his artistic journey over several decades, showing how his art has evolved? Did he want the art to be front and centre, or did he want to share equal billing? And finally – did he want the ability (now or in the future) to sell his art via his website?

These were the kinds of conversations that we had with Mark before we began.

The design phase

We won’t lie – designing a website for such a renowned artist was daunting! But this is where the ‘getting to know you’ sessions were invaluable. The message from Mark was loud and clear – it’s all about the art.

The design needed to clean and elegant, with nothing to distract attention away from the work.

But we didn’t just want it to be an online catalogue. Instead, we created a gallery of ‘dioramas’ that position select pieces within a range of settings – from an art gallery wall, to a modernist dining room or a contemporary office lobby.

We then added a portfolio, which grouped Mark’s work by themes.

In this way the website acts as an ‘exhibition space’ for key works that can be updated as required, as well as an online catalogue that showcases his entire portfolio.

The outcome

The Plattform – Mark’s aptly named website – is a beautifully clean design that places his art front and centre. Easy to navigate, it captures both the essence and the entirety of Mark’s creative works. The next stage of the site’s development is eCommerce functionality, which will enable buyers to purchase Mark’s art directly from the website.
